LIVING, BREATHING, FEELING

BACKGROUND

In the formative embrace of the San Gabriel mountains, my youth was a journey deeply entwined with the wilds, cultivating a profound respect for the natural world. It was here, amid the extremities of an unforgiving climate, that the seeds of my character were sown—seeds that would burgeon into an ironclad resolve, formidable physicality, and unwavering determination.

For me, these elements are indivisible from my essence. The very act of growing up in such a demanding environment instilled an innate sense of awe—a reverence for the natural world so intense that to interact with it without pushing past my own physical boundaries would feel almost sacrilegious.

I have immersed myself in the rigors of the outdoors: hiking, backpacking, climbing, canyoneering, and any discipline demanding immense endurance, focus, and the likelihood of calling a nylon bag home. These experiences are cherished, fervently sought after for their ability to transcend ordinary fun, even when they veer into the realm of 'Type 2 fun'—the kind that's only enjoyable in retrospect.

There's a unique tranquility in the landscapes less trodden, a dual serenity arising from both the natural preservation of less-accessible areas and the chance to connect with an existence untouched by digital screens and self-imposed limits. Whether traversing vast deserts, scaling windswept crags, or exploring the enigmatic depths beneath the waves, I find a sanctuary and an eternal mentor in the wilderness that lies beyond the confines of concrete.

Of late, my attention has turned to the intriguing shifts in consciousness that endurance activities provoke. What metamorphosis occurs in the mind after 130 miles and 10,000 feet of elevation on a bike tour? Is there a cultivated resilience that not only endures but also revels in such moments? Can a profound appreciation for the external world be unearthed through a deep internal challenge?

This is the query that defines my current exploration: Is it enough to simply exist within the bounds of comfortable living, or is the essence of being truly alive discovered in the relentless pursuit of pushing one's boundaries?
